GUILTY PALM: A Bitter Lesson

I remember that morning when “Miss anyi” pardon me, we used the word “Miss anyi” meaning our Miss to address our class teacher. She came to the class that morning with new coins. If am correct, the government just changes some Naira notes denominations into coins. How to Set Your Kitchen to look great

So, she brought them for her teaching aid that morning. She distributed the coins to us to see something which she was teaching us. At the end of that Subject, Miss Anyi called for her money. But one was returned and the second coin disappeared. She pleaded with us to return her money but everybody in the class was clapping their palms and dusting their uniforms to show innocence.
E zuola ego Miss Anyi!
Yes, it became pronounced, the money has been stolen. The face of the teacher has changed, she has gone paranoid. She hit her big stick on the desk and threatened. For where! The money didn’t come out.
I was the one running to her bag every time to search over and over again in case it has been returned without knowing. I was the last person she was suspecting. In fact, no one in the class suspected me. I was a good girl. I was the most intelligent in that class. In fact, all through, I had always been the champion in that school that I was nicknamed ‘eze ama na-agaechi’.
At the end of every term when prices are given for the best performed student, academically, once it got to my class, the pupils would chorus; “eze ama na-aga echi”. And their guesses were always correct. It was always, ‘the first position goes to.....Njideka Adinnu!’
Sorry, for drifting a little bit. I was trying to tell you why I was every teachers best. We have searched ourselves and it was the teachers turn to search the class. As usual, we began from the small small pilferers in the class, ndi agafee ihe efuo. Small small Deri nwamamas.
I ran to the back seat to search a boy in the class whom we nicknamed “Egbe”, the Hawk.
Come to school with Udara, if Egbe passed one will minus. I brought out his school bag and ransacked it but I found nothing. He spread his hands and palms, I also searched his pockets. When all the small Deris proved innocent, it was everyone’s turn to be searched.
ALL STAND!
There was a terror in the air as the teacher barked.
ALL HANDS UP!
Some of us (ITK = I Too Know) who were helping Miss to search scampered to our seats. Miss Anyi drew back to get her 2 canes. "Everybody raise your hands and open your palms", she commanded.
That was when I realized that I was holding pencil and ruler on my left hand. I was holding them all the while I was searching the suspects. I dropped the 2 items on the desk and BEHOLD THE MISSING COIN FELL OUT FROM MY PALM.
There was a thunderous uproar in my class.
Njideka oooooooooo!
The whole class screamed my name. I saw our teacher walking back to her seat. I saw her sank into her seat. She fixed her gaze at me. The Deris who I searched earlier came to me and started clapping on my face.
I took the coin, moved to meet Miss Anyi. I opened my mouth to talk, nothing came out. My throat became stuck. I wanted to say; “Miss, a maro m namjie” (Anty, I did’t know I was holding it”. But these words refused to come.
She looked at me, nodded and collected the coin.
Till today, I don’t know what the nodding means. Did she believe me? I don’t know.

MORAL OF THE STORY----
Friends, do you know I was innocent? I didn’t know I was holding the money. But I was the first to run to the back to search those suspects.
*I did not examine my life but I was examining other peoples’ lives.
*Before you point accusing finger or castigate someone because of what people say they do, try to search your palms (heart) first.
I have learned never to condemn anyone from what people say or what he or she does. I Search myself first before casting stone on a suspect.
